The multi-award-winning documentary by Marcia Jarmel and Ken Schneider, Los Hermanos/The Brothers tracks the parallel lives of two talented brothers in New York and Havana. Premiering in Finland at the World Village Festival, the film shows us their poignant reunion and their momentous first performances together.
Ilmar and Aldo López-Gavilán were born in Havana in the 1970s. At the age of 14, Ilmar was sent to the USSR to study violin. He ultimately landed as a working chamber violinist in the USA. Younger brother Aldo grew up mentored by Cuba’s impressive jazz and classical pianists, with his extraordinary talent achieving renown on the island but stymied elsewhere due to the US embargo. Although they see each other when family finances and visa restrictions allow, they have never had a chance to collaborate musically – something they have longed for all their lives.
