Authoritarian regimes are increasingly using digital tools to monitor citizens, silence dissidents, and restrict freedom. In Taiwan and Myanmar, artists and activists are responding to this with creativity and courage.
The programme brings two powerful Asian artists to the stage. Freddy Lim, frontman of the Taiwanese metal band CHTHONIC and Taiwan’s representative in Finland, has combined music, human rights activism, and politics throughout his career. May, born in Myanmar, is an artist and filmmaker living in exile in Europe whose documentaries portray the everyday lives of people living under authoritarian rule with a personal and uncompromising touch.
Through art, activism, and personal experiences, the speakers will explore how freedom is being challenged today and why every single one of us Finns has a role to play in defending global democracy and an open society.
The programme is in English. You can follow the programme at the festival’s Speaker’s Stage at Bio Rex or via livestream on the festival’s website.

Through art and action we forge unity in a volatile world. – Freddy Lim
What I ask from audiences, is not pity. It is to witness. To see what is being erased. To name it. To refuse the version of events that the generals and their backers are trying to sell. – May
