In 2016, a group of young activists protested against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline in the United States. One of the participants was Joseph White Eyes, an activist from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, who will be attending World Village Festival. Together with the Head of Greenpeace Finland Touko Sipiläinen, he will discuss the protests and how the oil company Energy Transfer continues to try to silence critical voices.

The Standing Rock protests grew into a nationwide movement to save indigenous lands and the Missouri River watershed. The resistance gained worldwide attention but also faced violent opposition. Which matters more, environmental protection or the money and power of an oil company?

The programme is in English. You can watch the programme at the festival’s Speaker’s Stage at Bio Rex or via livestream on the festival’s website.
