Festival summer kicking off – World Village Festival next week

World Village Festival goes live in Suvilahti, Helsinki, during the last weekend of May. Attracting tens of thousands of people, the free-admission event offers a wide spectrum of music and culture, inspiring stuff to do for the entire family, and exhibitors from CSOs to educational institutions and bazaar vendors.

Taking the Music Stage for their first live appearances in Finland will be Emel, Dub FX feat. Mr. Woodnote, Puerto Candelaria and Las Karamba, as well as the Finnish artists and acts Antti Autio, Maija Kauhanen, Don Johnson Big Band, Hassan Maikal and Children’s concert Indaba.

Talks and discussions at World Village Festival will bring you perspectives on courage to make the world more sustainable and just. The festival lineup also features a high-profile guest, as President Tarja Halonen’s participation in the International Solidarity Foundation’s programme has been confirmed: What kind of courage does it take to be the first female in a role?

The talks and discussions programme will include one of the internationally best-known Ukrainian war reporters Illia Ponomarenko, award-winning human rights defender and member of Kenya’s indigenous Endorois community Christine Kandie and Nepalese human rights activist Reena Lama. Also appearing on the Speaker’s Stage will be several influential speakers from Finland, such as Eeva Vekki, Maryam Abdulkarim, Laura Haimila, Emmi Nuorgam, Janne Hirvasvuopio, Koko Hubara and Natalia Kallio.

New this year will be the Book and Recycling World stands, programme for young people in the YMCA Peace & Sport area, and Funky Amigos Terrace Party. In addition, all the 50 street food vendors will be selling tasty vegetarian food. The performers in the Street Art Area, art, kids’ programme, evening clubs and pre-festival events will also help to ensure a great atmosphere. The entire programme is free of charge and without any age limits, except for the weekend’s evening clubs.
