Three decades of activity
After its establishment, the Society’s first role was to act as an integration supporter for Somalis who came to Finland. Later, the Society has been strongly involved in promoting integration and has organized various seminars, events and discussion sessions on the subject. Cooperation to promote integration continues with other organizations and actors. Currently, the Society’s focus is on our active projects.
The Society has also been involved in promoting trade between Finland and Somalia. The Society hopes that Finnish companies from various sectors will take advantage of the opening opportunity to participate in the reconstruction, investments and business cooperation in Somalia. Cooperation with the Finnish-Somali Business Council is part of the Society’s work to support trade relations. Relations between the countries have been good since the 1970s and Finland has a good reputation in Somalia. Finland’s active Somali diaspora is now able to offer its know-how to Finnish companies, which means that Finnish companies have excellent opportunities to succeed in Somalia.
Our active activities have long been visible in Somalia through development cooperation projects. The Society currently has two active development cooperation projects in Somalia. The projects are related to the dissemination of health information and services and environmental protection in areas that are difficult to reach. The projects cooperate with local actors. For example, the environmental project in Ramadi utilizes renewable energy sources and energy-saving stoves to preserve nature, and educational work is carried out in Somalia with local governments, schools, universities, local governments and communities to increase environmental protection. The projects take into account in particular the sustainable development goals in accordance with the 2030 Agenda.
In addition, the Society’s activities include organizing cultural events, exhibitions, and promoting multiculturalism at the grassroots level. For example, the annual World Village festival is part of the Society’s visible outreach activities and joyful encounters between cultures. You can also follow current events on our Facebook page.
