What is leprosy?
Leprosy is a mildly infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae.
It is often considered a disease of the past.
Today one person every two minutes is diagnosed with leprosy in 127 countries, globally about 200 000 new leprosy cases every year. Many millions people live with the physical and social consequences of untreated or late treatment of leprosy. The leprosy bacillus attacks the skin and nerves of the body. People may loose feeling in their hands and feet leaving them open to injuries which can lead to ulcers and even amputations in extreme cases.
The Leprosy Mission Finland (=TLM Finland) is a member of The International Leprosy Mission (TLM).
TLM Finland works with TLM Congo supporting their
projects. Information that leprosy is curable, early detection and treatment of new cases, ulcer care, peer support group work, health workers´s training in leprosy detection and treatment are some aspects of our work.
