Väestöliitto is Finland’s leading expert on global sexual rights. We work as experts through advocacy, development cooperation, and global communication. Our goal is to build a world where sexual rights are realized.
In our development cooperation, we support local partner organizations in seven different countries: Afghanistan, Nepal, Tajikistan, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Malawi. At the core of our work is the promotion of the sexual rights of the most vulnerable individuals, including the right to one’s own life, body, and sexuality. We create lasting changes by influencing attitudes and strengthening local partner organizations.
In Afghanistan, Nepal, and Tajikistan, our work enables persons with disabilities to learn about their rights, sexual health, and boundaries, as well as how to protect them. We ensure that sexual and reproductive health services are accessible to persons with disabilities. We collaborate with local disability and sexual health organizations.
In Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, we strive to ensure that no one’s love or identity is deemed illegal. We provide safe spaces for sexual and gender minorities in challenging environments, where they can freely express themselves. We support small LGBTIQ+ organizations in Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as advocacy efforts across Africa through a South African umbrella organization.
In Malawi, we challenge harmful gender roles and attitudes that fuel gender-based and sexual violence. Comprehensive sexuality education is at the core of our work: we train teachers and organize peer learning groups for young people. We also support community structures in providing support, services, and justice for those who have experienced sexual violence.
